I’ve always been a fan of universal laws. Especially, like the one in the movie The Secret.

If you’re not familiar with it, one of the most important teachings is the law of attraction. What we think and feel we will ultimately attract.

This also applies in regards to growing your private practice. Your mental attitude and emotional landscape will have a huge impact on the expansion of your practice.

But, and this is a big BUT, many people can often fall into magical thinking with the laws of attraction. I’ve worked with a lot of therapists that trust that the universe will provide them to the point where they don’t hit the pavement hard; they mostly sit on their therapy couch waiting for clients to arrive.

This type of magical thinking rarely works. The universe will respond to a healthy mindset and emotional landscape, only after you take an action aligned with outcomes that you want to create.

On the flip side of this are people who completely dismiss the law of attraction. They don’t take the time to explore their mindset. Often they have negative thought and emotional patterns that attract exactly what they don’t want. And they keep asking themselves why their practice isn’t growing.

And then their are the therapists that know they are trapped in problematic thinking, but they feel so stuck they don’t really do anything to change it.

Clearing out the clutter of the mind is really the first step in moving toward a successful therapy practice. But it’s obviously not a simple task.

Many of the thoughts, feelings and behaviors are entrenched from a lifetime of baggage. However, as you probably know, it’s entirely possible to transform this material or you probably wouldn’t be a therapist in the first place.

In order to start the process around what you want to attract in your private practice I recommend a very simple exercise that consists of three basic questions:

  1. How many clients do you want?
  2. How much money do you want to earn?
  3. What are you willing to do so that you are completely confident you will get there?

Return to these questions at the start of any day that you’re focusing time and energy on building your practice.

This may seem rather simplistic but the law of attraction will work if you know what you want, are confident you can get there, and take consistent action toward that goal. It’s all about creating a laser sharp awareness and simply showing the universe that you are serious about what you want. If you do that, the universe will respond until you are fully satisfied.
